Hundreds of Students Take Advantage of Sports Physical Clinics at Access Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics:
Clinics Raise over $1500 for Local Schools:

Exeter, NH - August 13, 2009 - When students started lining up outside of the doors of 155 Borthwick Ave in Portsmouth before 4pm last Tuesday, the Physicians and Staff of Access Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics knew that they were in for another busy Sports Physicals season. Offering two Sports Physical Clinics again this year, Access was able to provide pre-participation exams for over 300 local students.

For almost a decade Access Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics has been offering Sports Physical Clinics to athletes for only five dollars. This five dollars is then returned as a donation to the local school's athletic programs. This year's clinics raised over $1500 for schools throughout the Seacoast area.

The clinics wouldn't be possible without the support of the community and the many school's endorsements of the program. Months before the clinics are held, flyers and brochures are distributed throughout the schools and posted on websites. The clinics provide a quick and easy alternative for parents and athletes who may have trouble getting an appointment with their child's pediatrician or family doctor. In these troubling economic times, the five dollar fee is a welcome discount for an exam that may not be covered by some health insurance plans.

The Physicians of Access Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics along with dozens of staff members and their families volunteer their time each year for this important community event. Access Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics also thanks Dr. Jim Bloomer of Your Medical Home in Exeter for donating his time to help out at both of this year's clinics.

Access Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics understands how important it is to give back to the local community. The Sports Physical Clinic program is just one of many community events that Access supports each year.

Access Open MRI receives ACR Accreditation

EXETER, NH May 27, 2009 - Access Open MRI Center at Access Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics is proud to announce it has earned a three-year term of accreditation for its new Esaote S Scan OPEN MRI by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The accreditation came as the result of a lengthy review process by the ACR. This is the first ACR Accredited Open MRI facility of its kind in the Country.

The Access Open MRI Center uses pavilion shielding with an Esaote S Scan OPEN MRI that provides and has been accredited for both SPINE and Musculoskeletal Imaging. A traditional closed MRI involves a patient entering a narrow tube where mobility and visibility are limited. In the Access Open MRI, patients rest comfortably in an open pavilion where they are able to communicate freely with the MRI Technologist and look out windows. Traditionally, closed MRI scanners produce loud "knocking" sounds throughout the exam. The Access Esaote S Scan Open MRI Scanner is much quieter, producing only a soothing white noise throughout most of the exam allowing many patients to fall asleep. Patients are also encouraged to bring in an iPod or CD of their choice to be played during their MRI.

Access receives exam interpretations by the musculoskeletal fellowship trained radiologists of Proscan Imaging. Proscan radiologists are widely recognized as one of the world’s most experienced practitioners of MRI and other advanced medical imaging modalities -- currently reading more than 1,000 MRIs and CTs daily.

"Accreditation by the ACR demonstrates a commitment to quality care and patient safety," says Pamela Bronson, Administrator of Access Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics. "It shows patients, referring physicians, and payers that this facility has undergone a rigorous review process and meets nationally accepted standards of care. We are proud of that."

The American College of Radiology awards accreditations to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of the practice. Evaluations are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. They assess the qualifications of the personnel and the adequacy of facility equipment. The surveyors report their findings to the ACR’s Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report.

The ACR is a national organization serving more than 32,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists and medical physicist with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.

For more information about the Access Open MRI Center or to schedule a free tour of the facility, visit www.accesssportsmed.com/openmri, click on Patient Services/MRI or call (603) 775-7575 and ask for Eric.

The ImPACT Concussion Test:
The ImPACT Concussion Test, is a user-friendly, computer based neurocognitive test used to measure the effects of head-injuries in athletes. For the past three years, Access Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics has been the only certified ImPACT Concussion Test Center in the Seacoast of New Hampshire and one of only two in the state. ASMO has given presentations and lectures throughout New England to help educate coaches, parents and athletes about concussion prevention and treatment. In recent months, the serious dangers of head-injuries have been in the forefront of local and national media. Boston Celtics' forward Brian Scalabrine has missed several games this season suffering from the effects of post-concussion syndrome. Last month, ABC News aired a story in the wake of the death of actress Natasha Richardson, on the increased risk of head-injuries to female athletes. To see the ABC News story, click here.

To continue to educate the Seacoast of New Hampshire and increase awareness, ASMO will be giving several additional ImPACT and injury prevention presentations this Spring.

On Saturday, May 8th, ASMO will be speaking as part of USTA Team Day at Great Bay Athletic Club in Newmarket. ASMO will be talking to the group about common tennis injuries and injury prevention and treatment options.

On Sunday, May 17th, ASMO has been invited to address the New Hampshire Athletic Trainer's Association State Meeting in Concord. The discussion topic for the Spring 2009 meeting is, "The Current Trends in Research and Clinical Assessment for Mild Traumatic Brain Injury."

And on Wednesday, June 17th, ASMO will be hosting Seacoast area coaches for the annual ImPACT pre-season meeting and education session at Access Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics in Exeter. The goal of this meeting is to update and prepare coaches prior to the fall sports season.

Access Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics Now Offering PRP Therapy to Patients
Facility is the first in Northern New England Offering Treatment

Exeter, NH - Access Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics, the Seacoast's leader in innovative orthopaedic care and services, is pleased to announce an innovative new treatment option for torn ligaments, sprained tendons, and other common sports related injuries like tennis elbow and patellar tendonitis. Access Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics is the first facility in Northern New England offering platelet-rich plasma therapy to patients.

Platelet-rich plasma therapy or PRP therapy, is a revolutionary new treatment in which growth factors from a patient's own blood is injected into an injured area. This injection helps stimulate new ligament and tendon growth and helps injuries heal without surgical intervention.

The new technique has been a topic of recent publicity in the national media. PRP therapy was used on the Pittsburgh Steelers' Hines Ward and Troy Polamalu in the days leading up to the Super Bowl in February. Both players were able to play with injuries that may have prevented them from playing had they not received the treatment. Takashi Saito of the Los Angeles Dodgers received PRP therapy for a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament during the 2008 season. As a result, he was able to pitch effectively into September with an injury that might previously have required season ending surgery.

Access Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics has a brand new state-of-the-art Arthrex centrifuge system for PRP therapy in their Exeter location. In a simple 15-20 minute office visit, patients interested in the treatment will have their blood drawn, placed into the centrifuge system which will then separate the red blood cells from the platelet rich plasma which holds the growth factor. Once the high speed centrifuge has completed its rotations, the platelet-rich plasma which remains from the separation is injected back into the injured area.

For more information about platelet-rich plasma therapy and the new centrifuge system at Access Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics, please call (603)775-7575. To read the recent New York Times article highlighting the use of PRP therapy in professional athletes click here.

Northeast Surgical Care In the News:
Ambulatory Surgery Center "Helped Build a Foundation" for Additional Physician-Owned Outpatient Facilities:

Newington, NH - Northeast Surgical Care (NESC) was started by the Physicians of Access Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics in August of 2000. The facility is conveniently located in Newington, NH and is specifically dedicated to state-of-the-art ambulatory care. NESC is committed to bringing high quality, cost effective surgical care to the Seacoast community and offers patients innovative surgical treatment in an exceptionally relaxing environment.

Norheast Surgical Care was featured in an April Exeter Newsletter article, which described how NESC has helped pave the way for other physician-owned surgery centers in New Hampshire. To read the entire Seacoast Online article click here.

According to Dr. Josh Siegel, "Surgeons have to operate in operating rooms that are tied to the hospitals where they have privileges, and if those facilities do not meet the surgeon's or patient's needs, there are few alternatives."

NESC has helped Seacoast physicians adapt to the rapidly changing way in which medicine is being practiced. "These procedures are happening more quickly and efficiently," according to Dr. Siegel. Outpatient surgery has become the norm and physician-owned ASC's like Northeast Surgical Care have helped make the process as seamless and comfortable as possible for patients and their families.

Pam Bronson, administrator for Access Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics, who played an integral role in the opening of Northeast Surgical Care almost ten years ago says, "We're very proud of the foundation we helped build for this process."

The comfort and care of patients is the number one priority at Northeast Surgical Care. The staff are highly skilled professionals who are as compassionate as they are competent. NESC provides Seacoast area communities and physicians an alternative to hospital based outpatient surgery and more than 1,800 procedures are performed at the physician-owned surgery center each year.

Northeast Surgical Care was also recognized in a recent issue of Becker's ASCReview as a "Great Place to Work."
